Well what can I say? We had beautiful weather last weekend and so as I predicted in my last post we had walks, including a stroll along the promenade in Bournemouth and a long walk around Poole harbour.

It was perfect for recharging our batteries and putting the madness of our Monday to Friday lives on the shelf for a couple of days.

Not bad for a ten minute stroll from my parents house!

Geffrye Museum

As the train pulled into Hoxton on a recent visit to London we noticed a big period building with people walking through and so by the power of Google Maps I had a look and saw it was a museum. The museum goes by the name of Geffrye and as it says on the website it depicts the quintessential style of English middle-class living rooms.

As I've said before I'm not really into museums I get very bored easily, what keeps me going is the architecture to admire. As I'm a big fan of home interiors, this museum totally did it for me as it was basically a building full of rooms set up as they would have been over different periods through the last 100 years.

If anyone is in the area over the summer I'm sure it's even better than when we went as the garden will be open and the tea room is a huge sun trap.

A throwback to the Autumn

And breath....

The last couple of weeks have been quite mad! I love it but also love the chance to relax before it all kicks off again. We're thinking of moving house just to throw some more crazy times into the mix but it's all good.

This weekend we're off to my parents which is always nice, a walk around Poole Quay is no doubt on our list of things to do. It certainly is a break away from the city life we've been living the last few weekends.

So what better way to welcome the weekend than reminisce when things were calmer in October. (I promise these are the last photos from Cornwall!)

Currently I'm sat in a hotel in Utrecht, NL. I have a work trip here but just spent the last two days with my husband in Amsterdam which was very cool, should definitely combine business with pleasure more often though but perhaps in that order not pleasure than business as I just want to go home now!

So I've just grabbed a drink from the bar and thought I'll make the most of some free wi-fi and upload the last of our New York pictures. Last but not least we have the black and white film that we used on the last day. We woke up to snow and had plans to see central park covered in a white blanket but alas it didn't settle. The photos taken are from our walk around the lower end of Manhattan looking for some of the flea markets, a long walk around central park and then finishing the film around our hotel near Times Square.

These photos were taken with another lomo film. It was perfect for the really sunny weather we had the first couple of days when we went over to Brooklyn and when we explored Chelsea, Greenwich and areas around there.

You can't really get away from the skyscrapers in New York but I was definitely much happier in these areas. The pace was a lot more gentle and you at this time of year you escaped the crazy cold wind tunnels! I'm sure in the summer it's a completely different story seeking the tall buildings for their shade!

So off to New York we went! There really is something about that city. Since visiting New York when we were very young we have been saying we have to go back as we felt we had walked around in a daze and not done as much as we should. This time we did do a lot and yet again we have come away thinking we should have done more!

We have come away with great memories:

* Hotel only minutes away from Times Square * Brooklyn * Pizza in little Italy * Chicago on Broadway * Seeing New York from high up on the High Line * Imagining life as a fashion designer in the Meat Packing District * Wandering around Greenwich Village * Farmers market at Union Square...

Recent whirlwind

Phew! Without being a bore and going into detail things recently haven't quite been going smoothly. Last week we got some news which means everything can go back to normal (for now hey!) and we saw a quick gap and jetted off to New York with the money gifted to us by our wedding guests through Trailfinders.

We went there eight years ago and had the best time then and now the best time again.

Before we left I was quite busy with blogging only not on this website but on my friend Jay's site and then Charlie's. How exciting! I'm so looking forward to seeing Jay's allotment bloom, it's a great plot and I love the variety Jay has planned: veg, cut flowers and there are animals too! I'm also going to get my act together and sort out the wedding photos and hopefully do some more guest blogging on Charlie's site telling our wedding story.

Wonderful weekends

This weekend was one of those good weekends, family time and then some husband time. It all started off with making the house nice for family. We bought some sunny flowers and then baked some pasties, sausage rolls and scones. The snow made a bit of an appearance potentially making travel for the the family difficult but soon faded away (bittersweet). Hubby and I then went snow chasing the next day and I practised with manual focus on the camera.

Secretts farm shop

Secretts farm shop should be no secret it's just a bloomin' good place to go when you can't handle the manic trolley wars at the supermarkets. We find that some farm shops can be really good for veg or meat but often not both. However this one is good for everything. It also has a massive garden centre at the back and even bigger place in the summer for picking your own veg.

We went for a wander around and I think you'll see the fresh air went to my head a bit!

Eden project part 4

This post is my favourite and features the Mediterranean Biome. If you didn't know by now I love Spain so much and could quite happily move over there and build up a nice run down villa, have lots of happy tanned children running around in our acres of land which grows olives etc etc stop dreaming Caroline!!

Anyway walking into this biome was very nice, much cooler than the Rainforest Biome and had very pretty flowers to amuse myself with the camera.

Capital adventure

Another day another roll of film used. We hadn't been to London in a month and were a bit tired of walking around the countryside so hopped on the train last Saturday.

We started off with a wander around Borough and Jubilee Market. It was so much busier than the last time we went but was great all the same. We're currently doing a meat free challenge and really struggled to find tasty vegetarian lunch options. In the end I went for a wild mushroom pie only to find when I took my first bite that it was chicken and leek!

Next we found ourselves in the City of London admiring the retro buildings around the Barbican made pretty by everyone's green fingers!

We then ended up at Liverpool St Station and wandered up Shoreditch High St to Hoxton where we saw old meeting new by way of the modern tall buildings shooting out of the backdrop from a traditional street.

After that we went to a very cool museum which I'll blog about once I've sorted out all the pictures I took!

Porthmeor beach

My favourite kind of visit to the beach is when it's a cool sunny day so that I can enjoy the space and stroll along the coast letting my feet breath in the water.

Our visit to Porthmeor beach in St Ives was just that kind of day. We had a look around the Tate gallery and then walked around the beach watching all the dogs enjoy the beach just as much as us.

We made our way down the twisting narrow streets to an old fisherman's cottage which very much had all the original features and wasn't built for a couple of tall people!

Beyond the impractical features of the cottage was a lovely place with stunning views.

It was ten degrees outside and given we were dressed for that it was quite uncomfortable in the 30 degree Rainforest Biome. Beneath my woolen jumper I had quite a glitzy vest top but I had no choice to walk around dressed to impressed! I would show you the pictures but I just can't my hair took on the Monica from Friends style giving the new hubby much to laugh about.

Before going to our cottage in St Ives we stopped off at Padstow. It's a really lovely place with lots to do nearby I would like to go back and explore in more detail one day.

Hungerford revisited

We once lived in a small rural town which gave us nice escapes into the countryside. Due to impending redundancy we had to relocate to somewhere not as nice and so on a sunny weekend recently we went back to visit.

(Apologies for the really long post...)

After a walk in the countryside we went to Cobbs farm shop where we picked up some bulbs and had lunch. We're currently eating meat free for a month and given the farm shop is really good for their meat and fish the lunch menu didn't have a wide choice for vegetarians. We had welsh rarebit and lovely it was too.

It rained and it poured on New Years day in London. We were so lucky to be able to walk around Columbia Road flower market before the heavens opened. We're big fans of just wandering around London so the rain did throw us a bit. After having a bit of a sulk in a coffee shop we got the tube to the Natural History Museum.

I may make a few enemies by saying this but I'm just not into museums. I get really bored and sleepy walking around them. I'm all about the pretty and ignorant about the history of anything...

I have however always loved the grandeur of the Natural History Museum and can quite happily walk around and enjoy the architecture while the people I'm with look around the exhibits.

I'd like to go back on a really sunny day, I'm a big fan of natural light I bet it looks stunning!

Lessons learnt

When we were in London in the summer we went to the Lomography store and purchased some film. The conditions to get the best photos from this film are bright sunshine and then lots of colours which will then come through beautifully. Of course we're not experts and know this now we have had a film devleoped.

The first part of our film was taken in London on a really cloudy day, in St Ives as the sun was going down and then on Sunday just gone when the sun did come out....hmm

Here are some of my favourites from the film. Lesson learnt: put film in camera if conditions suit and use it up sooner than 6 months.

If you ever want something to do in London on a Sunday, head to East London and check out Columbia Road flower market. Columbia Road is a lovely little road with some amazing shops (so of course go there any other day) and on a Sunday you can find the flower market too I was in a little bit of heaven!

Yesterday I picked up the prints from a film we had taken photos on last year. The first part of the film was from a day we spent in London which included a trip to Borough Market and the second part is coming up later. We're really happy with the photos and have promised to use the SLR more and get the photos developed a lot sooner!

How very British of me to talk about this, but yesterday was my absolute favourite weather. I love it when it is really cold and sunny and as we had this type of weather forecast I got up really early and went for a walk in the frosty and misty surroundings.

I spent today at home with my husband but unfortunately for me I had work to get on with. I took lots of pictures in my breaks so I could learn how to use the camera and learn from mistakes. Hubby proved to be a nice subject through the day and as you can see not a lot really happened...roll on the weekend!

An afternoon at Petersham Nurseries

On our way back from London we took a detour to Richmond and walked down the river to Petersham Nurseries.

It is a really pretty garden centre with (in addition to plants) a greenhouse where you can have food and drink from the teahouse and a greenhouse where you can buy pottery and suchlike and eat a set menu.

We personally prefered the teahouse as having a three course meal at a garden centre seems a bit formal to me!

The greenhouse looked like a great place to wile away an afternoon but was a bit busy so we took our tea and cake outside. I loved the style of this garden centre, adding all the furniture to my mental wishlist and wishing I had a big garden to put it in.

We've been getting out as much as we can while being off work for the Christmas holidays and so yesterday we took a drive to Arlesford. Having just taken down our Christmas tree it was nice to see that Arlesford were clinging onto Christmas as long as possible with wreaths lining most the front doors. I'm also loving the Christmas trees above the doors!

I'm back to work tomorrow, it only feels like yesterday I was saying we were off to Devon. I'm looking forward to getting my brain in gear again but will still be living for the weekend when we can go wandering again.

New year wanderings

We had quite a busy night welcoming in the new year. It started off with a trip to Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park where we had a look around the stalls, ate some, drank some and then went on some rides. I absolutely love theme park rollercoasters, the higher and the more upside down they go the better - but for some reason I just can't do fairground rides which spin around ever since I squeezed my brothers arm till it went blue on the waltzers. My lovely husband and uncle twisted my arm to go on what I can only describe as a big claw that swings from side to side while spinning - it certainly made me feel very alive but I was shaking for about an hour afterwards and spent the whole ride holding onto my glasses I bet everyone on the ride were just laughing at me!

Is there anything Spanish that is not nice?

We then trekked over to the Thames to welcome in the new year and watch the famous firework display. It was truly amazing even though there were people everywhere and we had trees obstructing the display a bit.

Christmas wanderings

Happy new year!!

Our Christmas holiday unfortunately didn't go quite to plan this time around (neither did the last two, I'm thinking no plans this year will do the trick).

We drove to Dartmoor to the most lovely cottage which was so cosy with a log fire and located on the most twinkly street with a friendly pub within a stones throw. On Christmas Eve we had just made dinner and just as my Mum filled a ladle of soup and was about to poor it into a bowl the whole house went pitch black (it did make for a funny moment where she then had to make sure she got rid of this hot soup carefully).

An electrician came round to the house and decided that the cooker was making the fuses trip meaning the only option was to go home as cooking Christmas dinner the next day would be too dangerous (let's not go there that he was actually wrong - the owner got someone else to look into it on boxing day and it was actually the electric heaters causing it!).

It wasn't all bad though, we had a great walk in Dartmoor on Christmas Eve and another one on Boxing Day in Swanage near where my parents live.

We had the most amazing weather on this walk, we could see the sun coming from the horizon at the beginning and the next thing you know the clouds completely disappeared.

I've been fond of Donkeys ever since playing one in a drama club performance of Animal Farm at school

Not one but two sightings of my new surname!

The walk we followed out of my Dad's book of Dorset walks was great because it wasn't just a boring route through fields, we went up cliffs, through a farm, down Swanage seafront, past a castle and through some woodland.

We came across a lighthouse which housed an honesty charity shop.

We just spent the weekend in London welcoming the new year so lots more photos to share very soon!

2011 in 12 frames

I recently joined up to twitter and discovered this great blog Everything Reminds Me of You "retweeted". Elle's most recent blog post inspired me to look through all the pictures I've taken this year and try and summarise the year in 12 frames.

It was really hard to pick just 12 but the photos I have chosen I think are a good sample of where we were with our cameras this year. The first four pictures were shot on our SLR and the last three on the recently purchased DSLR. There is a Diana mini photo in the middle and the rest are shot with the iPhone.

My photography resolutions for 2012 are to learn a bit more about how to use the DSLR and try and transfer this to the SLR as I do still love the romance of film photography I just still don't know yet what I'm really doing!

Christmas treats

I've been meaning to get a wreath for my door for ages especially when I see the pictures that the lovely florist Jay Archer teases us with as she creates.

This week I spoke with my Mum and she mentioned getting table decorations for Christmas dinner and so I jumped at the chance to organise and contacted Jay.

I'm so happy with what Jay created in complete short notice too - I can't wait to see the decorations on our Christmas dinner table with a nice big candle too!

Oh and couldn't resist these little beauties - the smell is amazing!

In 2010 I made a new years resolution to enter a running race and suddenly I was hooked! I completely lost my focus in 2011 with wedding planning and only joined the gym in June with the other half so that our wedding attire still fitted!

On Sunday after two months of forgetting it's existence I walked the lonely walk through the housing estate I live on the edge of to the gym and found myself surprised by all the berries there were!

Today I went again and got my trusty phone out at each opportunity..

And to prove I really did go to the gym....

I think my new year resolution for 2012 will be the same as 2010 - time to find a race!

Before the sun went down this evening we decided to go for a quick walk. The afternoon was spent in a busy shopping centre so it was nice to get away from it all briefly.

As work winds down we've been trying to get festive by buying the tree and getting some presents together. In addition to what we normally do around the house I got some holly and mistletoe going cheap at the local garden centre and even made some decoupage stars for the tree as inspired by Kirstie though it's fair to say I didn't match the patterns up like she suggested therefore making them look like a 5 year old had a go - but I'm happy I'm making an effort for once!

Work is nearly over and we're off to a cottage with my parents next week can't wait!

Brighton

My oh so lovely husband reminded me a couple of weeks ago that I had agreed to go to an away game for his beloved football team playing Brighton and Hove Albion. And so last weekend we packed an overnight bag with unfortunately lots of lemsip and cough mixture and went to see the sights of the city. We stayed at Motel Schmotel - probably the best guest house I've ever been to and couldn't recommend it enough!

Our weekend consisted of a couple of walks along the beach, getting lost in the Lanes, a mexican takeaway (swallowed down with the aforementioned lempsip and x-factor we rock!), two craft markets oh and a cold game of football that featured a last minute goal from the home team oops!

The Vyne

We have a National Trust property a few miles from our house and so a couple of weekends ago we decided to have a look around. I can't believe we haven't visited The Vyne sooner - the Tudor property is set in huge grounds which are perfect for a nice picnic so I'm sure we will be back next spring.

Last week I jetted off to a conference in Tanzania. It was all very last minute and the choice was between sending me to Tanzania or Moldova so I made it clear that I would like the opportunity for working somewhere far away and it was pretty far - I've never been across the equator before!

The trip consisted mostly of conference rooms but a couple of times I wondered outside the hotel complex and saw some amazing community gardens, ate some great food and admired the Mount Meru that was looking over the town.

This last week was spent in a cottage in the Peak District with the company I work for with plans of bonding and getting the next year planned. It proved difficult, lots of honest chats some more cruel than others but at least we were in a nice setting to escape the tension and enjoy the great outdoors.

The weather was pretty bad, constantly foggy so I won't lie Snapseed did most the work here!

On the way to Cornwall we stopped off at Axminster to have Lunch at River Cottage.

The deli was really busy and we fancied something a little bit more exciting than a sandwich so headed into the restaurant. We both ordered fish dishes off the starters menu and were really chuffed with the amount of food on the plates!

New camera

Yesterday I broke....we weren't getting very far in learning photography with the SLR and getting films developed proved expensive so while it cost a lot right now I think it will pay off in the long run.

We couldn't resist trying it out right away and last night went for an autumn walk.

Highs and Lows

This weekend was probably our lowest of the wedding planning due to some family politics but perhaps one of my personal highlights as we journeyed over to South Gloucestershire to deliver jugs to the lady who has grown and will be arranging our flowers for the big day.

We also did a couple of our DIY tasks which always makes us feel great that we are putting our own stamp on the wedding.

A birthday and a weekend away

Our one month countdown to the big day started exactly on the Mr's birthday. Since our wedding meal will be a Spanish feast we decided to head to La Tasca (I live in Basingstoke...) to start the excitement.

The weekend was a busy one as the dress was finally ready to be picked up and since it was all the way in Essex the maid of honour kindly booked a hotel in London for us and mother of the bride.

While the dress had a few last minute alterations we took a walk down a country lane to the most amazing garden centre. We're getting the wedding flowers from Organic Blooms, a business who grow seasonal cut flowers and so the flowers we end up getting all depend on what survive the change in season that's suddenly begun! Our trip to the garden centre was a handy trip to see what's around.

How great is this wildflower garden, I'm definitely going to try and recreate this in our little flower beds at home.

Then off to London we went.

Our hotel was in Paddington where there are lots of Mews, don't you just love a London Mews!!

We had a few drinks in China town and went for a chinese it was great! Oh and then we got a rickshaw back to the hotel but every photographical evidence of that were fuzzy, a bit like my head was at the time :)

Antique hunting

This weekend had a funny turn. We've both been getting very fed up with the layout of the living room and we put it down to a huge TV unit taking up the room. I really don't think living rooms should centre around the TV so suggested we should go and face the ikea traffic on Saturday and sort out this problem.

In some situations I'm a huge believer in fate and when we joined the heavy traffic on the M3 and heard a message on the radio that the southbound traffic between Winchester and Southampton was an hour delay, our decision to turn back was one of our best yet.

Just as we headed back I said we could go to Farnham where there is a really amazing antiques centre that we had visited before and we could hunt around for some more wedding bits.

Here are a few shops and things that caught my eye.

Dorian Crafts

I refer to this room as a treasure chest, it has so many pretty items though if you could ask me to pick something out I couldn't as you are so spoilt by choice. I do love the little shop though and would be quite satisfied to look at every item in detail.

Just The One

The attic of the antiques mill holds a gem of a shop. We love all things shabby chic and this room has everything we would need to create our shabby chic house.

I have a little obsession with wooden boxes and this one really caught my eye but I was very good and had to tell myself I don't NEED another wooden box and slowly walked away.

This picture made me smile. My Nana had a collection of these photographs and for a short moment I was very little and thinking it was my Mum in the pictures all over again.

Borough Market

Yesterday we had to go to London and pick up the wedding rings we have had made and it's fair to say we've enjoyed our "excuses" for London recently. After doing some other wedding errands we headed quite late in the day to Borough Market.

I love food markets, back home we visit farm shops and farmers markets quite a lot wishing we had the cash to do our "weekly shop" but just walking around them and looking at what all the passionate people have to offer is exciting enough for me.

This fish counter was great and this chap was practically giving the fish away. The advice is to go to the market very early in the day to avoid crowds and get the food at its freshest but at 4pm you can get some great deals!

Oh to be a florist!

I got our Diana Mini film developed today which was packed full of our recent camping trip but yesterday had one more picture left and thought we would capture our mugs. I love film photography as often in my case I forget what was taken at the beginning of the film so it's always an exciting surprise. Our SLR had a black and white film of our camping trip which will get developed soon so looking forward to blogging that!

Scotland

Today I miss the Scottish Highlands.

This time last year we took a family holiday to bonny Scotland for some walking and relaxation in the great outdoors.

Glen Coe, "dark and foreboding" according to the guides and yes it was, very Lord of the Rings. These two pictures were taken at a pit stop on the way up to Fort William.

We triumphed Ben Nevis!

Scotland was definitely on our wish list for wedding and honeymoon but we focused on Autumn time for the festivities which probably would have been a wash out...we will be back though!

South Bank festival

South Bank was buzzing at the weekend! There is a festival going on most weekends until the beginning of September and we managed to bump into the action surrounding a vintage festival fair. Behind the Royal Festival Hall was a great food festival. We walked around and enjoyed the smells and sat with a drink - the Mr had a large Polish beer and I had a really rather strong cider.

London really is very nice when the sun shines.

Here I am internet, Caroline Starrs. I love taking photos, eating, gardening (though I'm not very good at it), going to the pub, going for walks, I would say I love the gym but I think its the feeling I've worked out and I've done my bit for my body that I love not the actual exercise, making things which has been honed out of crafting for our wedding in October, seeing new places, Spain, camping, shabby chic furniture, my family, my friends and last but not least my man.

I love chatting but I'm rubbish at writing so this space will mostly be filled as a photo diary rather than a place to air my thoughts. You never know though I may grow some confidence!
